Outreach & Evangelism
Outreach is the church going to its neighbours rather than waiting for them to come. The guides here cover choosing the right event, planning for the two seasons people are most open to an invitation, and running an evangelistic event where the gospel is clearly shared.
Every guide ends in the same place: follow-up. An outreach that collects names and never calls them has done half its work. Start with the ideas list, or go straight to the season you are planning for.

Key terms
- Connection card
- A card or form where guests can share their contact details and next steps — wanting prayer, to visit a church, or to learn more. It is how an outreach event turns into ongoing relationships.
- Debrief
- A meeting soon after the event to record what worked, what did not and what to change next time. Writing the answers down is what lets next year's team start ahead.
- Discipleship
- Helping a person grow as a follower of Jesus over time — through Scripture, prayer, community and obedience. After an outreach, it is what turns a decision into a disciple (Matthew 28:19–20).
- Evangelistic event
- A gathering planned so that people who don't yet follow Jesus hear the gospel clearly and can respond. It has three marks: the gospel is proclaimed, people are invited to respond, and those who do are followed up and discipled.
- Follow-up message
- A personal text, call or email sent after an event — using the person's name, mentioning the event and offering one specific next step — ideally within 72 hours.
- Follow-up plan
- A plan, made before the event, for who contacts each guest, how, and how soon afterward. Follow-up that is decided in advance actually happens; follow-up left until after the event often does not.
- Great Commission
- Jesus' command to His followers to go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them and teaching them to obey everything He commanded (Matthew 28:19–20). It is the reason outreach events exist: not attendance, but disciples.
- Ministry partner
- Someone who sustains a missionary or ministry worker through regular giving and prayer, sharing in the fruit of the work without going themselves (Philippians 1:5). Many mission workers are fully funded by partners.
- Parent-choice Christmas shop
- A free "shop" of donated new toys where parents choose gifts for their own children, often with gift-wrapping provided, so the gift comes from the parent. A dignified alternative to handing out pre-chosen gifts.
- Prayer walk
- Walking the streets of a neighbourhood in small groups, praying for the homes, schools and businesses you pass — and offering to pray with anyone who would like it. One of the simplest outreaches a church of any size can do.
- Response team
- Trained volunteers who meet people who respond to the gospel at an event — praying with them, explaining the next step simply, and recording contact details with permission so they can be followed up.
- Serve-the-city day
- A day when a church — or several churches together — sends many small teams to do practical projects for schools, care homes, charities and neighbours, showing the love of Jesus in action.
- Street evangelism
- Sharing the gospel with people in public places — streets, parks, transit stations — usually in small teams, often alongside practical care like food, prayer and conversation.
- The harvest
- Jesus' picture of people ready to respond to the gospel: "The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few" (Matthew 9:37). Churches use it for the people an outreach is trying to reach.
- Volunteer appreciation
- Thanking volunteers specifically and promptly after an event — a message, a note, a story of what their service made possible. Volunteers who feel valued are far more likely to serve again.
