How much contingency should a church event budget have?

Ten to fifteen per cent. Below ten per cent, one surprise — a permit, a rental minimum, a wet-weather plan — forces you to cut something that mattered.

Why does the split change by event type?

Because the costs do. A conference spends heavily on venue, AV and food; a worship night on sound, lighting and staging; a community outreach more on promotion and materials. The shares are starting points — replace them with your own actuals after your first event.

Are these amounts what I should spend?

They are a first-pass allocation to plan against, not a quote. Use them to check whether your total is realistic for the event you have in mind, then replace each line with real prices as they come in.
